A Feel-Good Musical with a Powerful Message
Hairspray is a world-famous American musical with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the 1988 film by John Waters.
Set in 1962 Baltimore, the story follows teenage Tracy Turnblad as she pursues her dream of dancing on The Corny Collins Show. When Tracy unexpectedly becomes a local celebrity, she uses her platform to challenge social norms and advocate for inclusion, acceptance, and positive change.
Packed with high-energy dance numbers, humor, and heart, Hairspray delivers an uplifting message that aligns beautifully with The Wheelhouse’s mission of transformation and hope.
